I send out a &quot;norms survey&quot; to each team member individually, prior to the session, and ask them to fill it out.  It asks specific questions to help trigger their thoughts about what norms the team actually operates by.  For example, it asks questions like, &quot;How are quiet, reserved members of the team treated?  Are they asked for input on team decisions, or is their silence taken as consent?&quot;  Stuff like that.  Hope that helps; I&#039;d be glad to send you a copy of what I use if you want to email me (anna@tangotraining.com).

Thanks for sharing your process. You provide your readers with some nice strategies to put into practice. How do you get people to describe their norms? How do you frame the question? I find getting people to describe their own cultural norms is like trying to get a fish to describe the water in which it is swims. They know the norms exist, but can&#039;t imagine functioning without them!
